May 18, 2013, Islander Club Dive

I’m catching up on updating our club website and am starting with the May Islander dive. On May 18, a few intrepid members of the club met to dive The Islander. Tim Raughley, Kevin Lauricella, and I, from the Syracuse area, the southern-most members; Chantelle Blanchard of Ottawa, one of our members from up north; and President Ken Kozin of, yes, Clayton! all gathered on a lovely spring day to take a dip in the chilly waters of the St. Lawrence. Membership from a wide…

May 2013 Clean-Up Dive

The Clayton Diving Club clean-up dive was a resounding success! Sponsored by the Village of Clayton, Clayton Diving Club, and the Antique Boat Museum and organized by Rod Azar, the clean up saw more than double the participation this year thanks in part to club member Bob Sherwood who brought in more than a dozen divers from his group Northeast Underwater Explorers. Dive club members Rod Azar (clean up organizer), Ken (president) and Carol Kozin, Dennis and Kathi McCarthy, Janet Sullins, and Skip Couch helped…

August 11th 2012 Dive on the AE Vickery

Hello CDC, We dove the A.E. Vickery on August 11th, 2012.  We dove off Ken Kozin’s very comfortable boat 2-Dive-4.  There was a morning dive and a noon Dive.  A total of 9 divers and one recently certified Barbie diver (look for her in the pictures) hit the waters. The water was in the 70s and the vis was not as good as it was in July, but it was still good enough to enjoy a great dive on the Vic.  Can you have a bad dive on the Vic?  The Vickery has seen better days and…

June 16th 2012 Dive on the Islander

Hello CDC, we had 9 divers show up for the June 16th, 2012 dive on the Islander!! We had some of the regular faces plus some new members that showed up to dive.  The water is warming up and is now in the 60s. There was a bit of boat traffic that day and I think there were at least 2 other classes going on at the Islander while we were there.  The ramp was more congested than an LA freeway during rush hour at…

May 19th 2012 St Louis Dive

Well the CDC started the 2012 dive season with a great turn out for the St Louis dive in Cape Vincent. The weather was fantastic and the water was flat. The water temp was around 80……minus 25. Vis was great. The best part of the dive was it did not end in a “Bang” like last year, which was a good thing. (Editors note: I am still convinced that Skip shot at me, windows do not just explode like that..lol) It was fantastic to see…

Club Dive on the Keystorm

Diver on the wreck of the Keystorm

The Clayton Diving Club dove Saturday, August 27, 2011 on the wreck of the Keystorm near Outer Scow Island Shoal, in the St Lawrecne River. The Keystorm, a 256-foot-long, steel-hulled, cargo vessel with a 43.5 foot beam displacing 2300 tons, was built about 1908 in Wellsend, England. It was carrying a cargo of 2230 tons of Bituminous coal when on October 12th, 1912 at about four o’clock in the morning when she struck Outer Scow Island shoal and sunk. Dive co-coordinator was Ken Kozin, Clayton,…

Club Dive on the Maggie L

Last Saturday, July 23, 2011, the Clayton Diving Club dove on the wreck of a Maggie L. off Clayton, NY. The Maggie L. was a wooden schooner that sunk after a collision with a steel freighter on November 4th, 1927, as she was leaving the main shipping lane towards Clayton. The Maggie L. was one of the last commercial ships to sail on Lake Ontario and the Upper St. Lawrence River. Dive coordinator was Bill Hammond, Cape Vincent, with Skip Couch, Clayton, helping onboard during…

First Dive of the 2011 Season

The first 2011 Clayton Diving Club Dive was a success. Thanks to all who came out on Saturday, May 21, to Cape Vincent for the dive and lunch at Aubrey’s. Ten divers braved the 46 degree water to check out their gear and explore the St Louis.
